Back to the village: tradition and nostalgia

Paleomonastiro village has 2 grocery shops, a bakery, a shop selling coffee and fresh homemade pies, a café, two grill houses and a pharmacy - all within a 3 minute walk from our Casa. There are also a number of excellent walks, as well as some amazing local villages to explore.

Meteora

Just three letters: a-w-e. A preserved and protected moment of humanity. A miracle of nature combined with the miracle of iron human will.

Finding words to accompany powerful travel photos of such a heaven on earth is always a challenge. Meteora site deservedly sits atop UNESCO World cultural heritage list, is always firmly on the travel radar and has deservedly evolved into a destination hotspot in Greece.

Once you find yourself in “Santorini of the mainland” as I usually call the area, every single step and viewpoint guarantees breathtaking wrap-around views and the most mesmerising vistas of the monasteries perched on clifftops overlooking Kalambaka city. There are so many of them-one is spoilt for choice.

Apart from visiting the Holy Monasteries, there are a whole lot of activities for every taste: hiking in a network of over 100km of ab fab trails, e-biking, truffle hunting, just to mention but a few. One thing is certain: there are so many amazing things and places to explore! Be prepared to create thrilling memories and experience the adventure of a lifetime.

Palaiokaria waterfalls

The most photogenic stone bridge in Greece hands down, dating back to the 16th century. A blissful oasis that has become a fixture in travellers' and photographers' websites and social media for a reason. Famed for its amazing double waterfalls (the one behind the bridge is 12m high), Palaiokaria bridge is a hidden gem in a locale of unbelievable natural beauty.

Don't miss the opportunity to walk along the stone bridge-yes, you can!: your heart will go pitter-patter and you'll feel the power of nature first hand along with the coolest vibes ever. Must visit!  (18 min drive from Casa Delicosta)

Portaikos stone bridge

Within just 5 km from Casa Delicosta, after a short drive through abundant plane trees, pull over. Are you ready to take yet another awe-inspiring trip back in time? Walk past the one-arched bridge in the tiny valley of Portaikos river and feel the enduring allure of aged stone bridges, every pebble of which encapsulates loads of Greek history.

The spot is ideal for a mini serene hike where the only sounds you can hear are the whoosh of wind through tree branches, the gurgling river and bird chirping. Spoil yourself with a hot chocolate in winter or a freddo espresso in summer at café Ennodia that offers spectacular vistas of the bridge and the river.

Church of Porta Panagia

An astounding heavy stone monument built in a peaceful location just a stone’s throw away from Portaikos stone bridge.

The Church of Porta Panagia was built in 1283 by the Byzantine regional emperor Komninos and is literally one of a kind. It is definitely worth it to take a detour and find yourself there to take a break, unwind, breathe and meditate. The sacred aura of icons and flickering candles permeates the atmosphere and your very first step into its amazing indoor space will immediately teleport you to the Middle Ages.

Take some time to admire the two huge mosaic icons that greet you as you enter the church – they’re unique in Greece and something you’ll never come across again: they are placed on either side of the Main Gate in the opposite position from that of the Orthodox Christian Order (Christ is always on the left and Virgin Mary on the right, but this is not the case in Porta Panagia Church). Mindblowing, huh?
